Friday

Lichfield to Nottingham

(59 miles)

Todays Route

The route between Lichfield and Derby crosses relatively level countryside on a wide variety of surfaces.  Minor roads predominate, but there are also sections on canal towpath and longer traffic-free sections through Burton-upon-Trent.

From Etwall to Mackworth, on the outskirts of Derby, the route is all traffic-free following the line of an old railway.  The route into Derby city centre follows cycle lanes along the major roads.

From the centre of Derby the route passes close to the railway station before following the cycle route alongside the River Derwent.  At Borrowash the interim route follows the road for a few miles into Long Eaton before reverting to traffic-free cycle paths and cycle lanes for most of the way into Nottingham.

Close to Lichfield we stop to visit the 150 acres of trees and memorials devoted to the concept of Remembrance.

The Arboretum is the home of the Armed Forces Memorial which was opened in October 2007.

It is a striking and emotive memorial and is quickly assuming national significance.

It gives recognition and thanks for those who have died whilst on duty or as a result of terrorist action since the Second World War and acknowledges the enduring sacrifice of those who mourn their loss.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of each November (11th month) a shaft of sunlight passes through this and other slices in the structure to illuminate the central wreath.
