This tower was built to keep an eye on the sugar cane workers.

Cuba has just shut down 70% of it's sugar production capability.  Mainly due to a lack of markets (or ability to get to markets).  They have made tourism the number one industry of the island.

The ration shop.

Cuba has endured rationing for over 50 years.  For example each person can have one bar of soap a month.

Even though many items are rationed, this board indicates what is in stock.

We stopped at a farm. Bearing in mind that these farmers are considered wealthy, the house was far from our standards.

Che Guevara Square

This monument, mausoleum and museum is a vast square square guarded by a bronze statue of El Che.

2004-11-13_1DS1_C2FW0612-001.jpg

The statue was erected in 1987 to mark the 20th anniversary of Guevara's murder in Bolivia.

The writing on the tablets of stone is a transcript of Che's letter to Fidel when Guevara left Cuba.

His remains were brought here in 1997 and are interred in an underground mausoleum under the monument.

We went into the mausoleum and found it a very moving and beautiful place.

'Revolutions rarely, if ever, emerge fully ripe, and not all their details are scientifically foreseen.   They are products of passion, of improvisation by human beings in their struggle for social change, and are never perfect. Our revolution was no exception.'

Enesto Che Guevara (1961)
