From Beattock to Appleby this 73 mile day was to be the first full one. We started in damp conditions and they went from bad, to worse, to horrendous! Never has so much rain fallen on such an undeserving bunch. We were soaked to the skin, and cold too. Gretna Green was lost in a mist of spray, with only a brief pause in the rain to celebrate the crossing of the border. The afternoon saw a mild improvement and despite a number of deviations from the planned route we found our way to Appleby, and the welcome warmth of the White Hart Hotel. Our host for the night took all the wet clothes and arranged to have them dried. More hot baths and we started to feel human again. A hard day - which proved to be the hardest.
