Kakadu National Park

World Heritage listed Kakadoo National Park is one of Australia's most prized cultural and ecological treasures.   The 20,000sq kms is 250kms south of Darwin.

The name Kakadu is from the Gagudju speaking people.  The shelters, stone tools, grindstones and ochre indicate that the Aboriginal people have lived in the vicinity now defined by the national park for over 50,000 years.

the sunset wasn't that fantastic, but we enjoyed the tranquillity of the moment.  There were about 20 people watching with us.  The record according to the ranger is 500!!

Nourlangie Rock

2005-10-19_SP200_DSC00120.JPG

On our second day in the park we travelled to Nourlangie to see the ancient Aboriginal shelter, several outstanding displays  of rock art (zzz!) and some impressive views over the Kakadoo Escarpment and Nourlangie Rock

This was really good fun.  The loose looking ground isn't loose at all it's fused pebbles in lava.

the fire to the right of the rock is a constant part of the park.  A third of Kakadu is purposely burnt each year to promote growth and kill the dominant grasses.
