Saturday 26 January
Australia Day
Australia Day, celebrated annually on 26 January, is the official
national day of Australia, commemorating the establishment of the first
European settlement on the continent of Australia. The date is that of
the foundation of a British penal colony at Sydney Cove on Port Jackson,
New South Wales, by Captain Arthur Phillip, who was to become the first
Governor.
Australia Day is an official public holiday in all states and
territories of Australia
|
We depart the Yacht Club in
Fremantle and motor on David's new boat about 10kms up the Swan River to
Perth. The plan is to anchor with a few thousand other boats by
the city. Enjoy the festivities (get drunk) and watch the
fireworks display when it goes dark. It's a great family day out.
Doug surveys the seas... |
|
We leave Fremantle and head towards Perth and the Swan River |
Past the Maritime Museum |
Laurie & Kairen joining in the fun of the day celebrating everything
that is good to be Australian |
|
|
Tim's boat joined us...then past us
(he got bored with our (legal) sedentary pace and started doing 'donoughts') |
Jean, Doug & Wendy |
Cap'n David |
There were thousands of boats all trimmed up heading up the River to
start partying |
The City of Perth comes into view |

|
|
We moored alongside Tim & Marks boats. They were already in full party
mood. |
|
|
We moved from boat to boat, sharing their hospitality each time. It was
a wonderful atmosphere and everybody was there to have fun... |
The Sky show started at 16.00 with an air display |
Lots of people were zooming around in small boats water cannoning
anybody and everybody |
|
|
|
|
You are only allowed to drink 'on' the river. Not on the shore.
If you don't have a boat.... take your beer with you into the water! |
|
Friendly pirates |
Once you have cooled down in the River (which was full of brown
jellyfish) you can clean off with the boat's shower |
|
As dusk approached all the boats turned on the local radio station ready
for the fireworks |
|
The radio provided the music to the most amazing firework display |
|
|
A spectacular finish to the most wonderful day |
