It took almost 30 minutes for the ship to make her way through the port with the help of two tug-boats before the massive operation to turn her around and dock her at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal.

The 293m liner was launched by Queen Elizabeth in 1967 and has crossed the Atlantic about 800 times. It has carried more than 2.5 million passengers.

Docked and about to deposit a couple of thousand people into sleepy Freo...it's going to be busy in town today.

Queen sails in for final Freo fling

The luxury cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2 has arrived in Fremantle to a grand welcome.

A school band played jazz music as about 200 people lined Victoria Quay to welcome the 70,327 tonne passenger liner to Fremantle for the last time this morning. As helicopters hovered above and a Water Police vessel led the way, the ship arrived fashionably late at 8.30am to cheers from the crowd.

The ship was guided into the harbour by two tug boats in calm seas.

Hundreds of QE2 passengers waved and looked out from viewing platforms as the impressively tall ship turned around to dock in front of the passenger terminal.

Just after 9am the ship had smoothly turned around and docked.

Some of the people waiting on land held up signs welcoming home family members.

A few waved international flags and some stood on chairs to get a good view of the ship arriving.

The QE2 is on a farewell world tour and is due to be decommissioned in November. It is destined to become a floating hotel in Dubai.

The Queen Elizabeth 2, or QE2 as she is commonly known was the flagship of the Cunard Line for over 30 years. QE2 made her maiden voyage in 1969 and is one of the last great Transatlantic liners. At 70,327 tons and 963 feet long with a top speed of 32.5 knots she is also one of the largest and fastest passenger vessels afloat.
