Wednesday 13 February We have made contact with Ian Ross and his wife Jenny, who live at Darlington about 40km from Freo. Ian flew with Reg Baker during WW2 and had some fascinating stories to tell |
Helen (Reg's daughter) came with us too. |

Saturday 16 February Early out of bed to be at Cottesloe for 06.45 to watch the start of the annual Rottnest Channel Swim. |
The longest open water organised swim in the world. 2100 swimmers and 900 support paddlers (canoeists) making the 20km to Rottnest |
it was only just dawn when we arrived |
plenty of people here already |
boats as far as you could see |
The swimmers are not allowed to wear wet suits ...it's a long way! |
The swimmers set off in 'waves' of around 100 people. Each wave was a different category identified by the colour of their swim hat |
|
When you looked out to sea there was a line of boats, swimmers and kayaks as far as visible all the way towards Rottnest |
|
