Tasmanian Devils and back to Hobart

Tuesday 15th December

Our tour of Tasmania is drawing to a close and we have noted a Tasmanian Devil conservation park locally.  Our drive back to Hobart is delayed whilst we take a look.

It's a beautiful day and we make the most of our remaining time in the lodge
2009-12-15_Canon EOS 40D_IMG_4042.jpg

We can just see the bay from our lodge

A few short steps and it's very pretty

Despite looking really cute, they are extremely viscious

The size of a small dog, they are stocky and muscular

An analysis of mammalian bite force relative to the body size shows that the devil has the strongest bite of any living mammal

First seen in 1996, devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) has ravaged Tasmania's wild devil population by about 50%
2009-12-15_Canon EOS 40D_IMG_4168.jpg

These healthy devils are quarantined in case the wild population dies out.

We watched a great birds of the wild demonstration, with most of the birds having been rescued in some way.

We are back in Hobart.  The sun is shining and it looks much nicer than when we left the rain a couple of weeks ago.

The Sea Shepherd's Ady Gil is still in port.  They had left for Antarctica but had to return because of an electronics fault.  This fixed the New Zealand Government (under which they are registered) were being awkward about permission to set sail for the Antarctic water to harass the Japanese whaling fleet.
